What is the difference between SEO and SEM?

SEO is an acronym that stands for Search Engine Optimization. In very simple terms, it means taking the necessary actions to make sure you website is easily found by customers.

What are those actions? It is one part content and one part technical. It means making sure your website has the right content that people are naturally searching for. It also means optimizing your site from a technical standpoint so that search engines can “crawl” or scan your website.

SEM is an acronym that stands for Search Engine Marketing. In very simple terms, it means paying a search engine to promote your business website. When users search on Google, Bing or other search engines, they may be more likely to see your business website appear in top search results, if you’ve paid to promote your site.

Simply put, SEO is when you earn clicks. SEM is when you pay for clicks. With proper SEO, you can reduce the amount you spend on paid advertising or SEM.
